Run/Walk w/Deb - 0.5 hours - 06/14/2008

We managed to get out before the worst of the day’s heat and humidity had piled up, but the air was still very thick and sticky.

This week’s “fine arts camp” went well (40+ kids this year), but there was no time for running (okay, honesty: not much energy for running either … esp. when the only daylight left was late in the day in lingering mid-90s temps), so it was good to get out and do *some*thing, even if it was just a run-a-bit-walk-a-bit session.

Deb’s route of choice includes “agony hill,” and it’s well named, though it’s more downhill agony for me than trying to make it up the 15% grade angle. My shins and knees just can’t handle the stress and extra weight of coming down that beast.

I probably couldn’t run the whole way up, but I just plain CAN’T run down it.

I’m glad I got some miles in one way or another. Countdown to the Cornerstone Festival 5k Run: 19 days.

Run - 0.5 hours - 06/03/2008

very, very muggy (though it can and will get much worse before the summer’s over) … it’s probably overly obvious to remark that I’d probably enjoy running a lot more (double meaning intended) if I weighed a lot less (15-20 pounds) … talk is cheap, and a 1500-calorie a day diet is cheaper than what I normally eat these days, but, it seems, it’s a price I’m not willing to pay.

About 3.5 kilometers with Deb … she’s put together her marathon training plan in prep for Atlanta (Thanksgiving Day). I can run faster, much of the time, but she can run further almost all of the time.

Run - 0.4 hours - 05/31/2008

Thought I might go 4 miles today, but my body changed my mind … any other time, I would have just pushed on through, but I need to get over the “all or nothing” fear, so I’m chose to “sacrifice” the pride today and walk a bit while I get back to a steady routine of higher frequency, higher-distance runs.

Some days it’s mind over body. For borderline obsessive-compulsives like me, most days the issue is more like “progress-encouraging mind” over “self-destructively rigid and fearful” mind. That’s today’s news.

More miles next week, *Deo volente*.

The fastest 5k I’ve run since March 31st (25:45) and close to the time I had for the Reindeer Run in Comer, GA last December (25:53) … I was dehydrating halfway through, but this is the general territory I want to be in …

Run - 0.4 hours - 05/26/2008

Memorial Day Holiday run … once again, an “acquaintance” thought it was funny to pull in front of me– across traffic– and cut me off in an intersection with his 5,000 pound truck as his “playful” way of saying “hello.”

Grief.

Sure. Great.

Smile and wave … and cut me off and make me break my stride. Yeah, hello to you, too.
Great sense of teamwork there, coach.

The 1st Day of the Rest of My Running Life

I finished a 5k in 27:08 today after last evening’s boondoggle. That’s a relief and a blessing.

No walking and no major stitch pain or breathing issues. No great speed or ease or “soul refreshing moment of endorphin-laced ecstasy” either, for that matter, but I ran the whole way and walked not at all.

I’ll take it!

The scale said 178 pounds, and that’s down from the 182 puffer-fish max-out of last Sunday, and it’s 15 pounds up from what I would like to have as my absolute maximum weight.

Long way to go …

I’ve realized that “being healthy” is not exactly my running goal, and that may be at the center of a real issue for me.

But more about that another day.
